Wedding Band Trends: Curved, Stackable and Eternity Bands

The wedding band is no longer the plain sidekick. Curved bands, stacks and eternity rings are changing how couples pair their rings. Here is what is trending and how to choose.

Yellow gold diamond eternity wedding band

For years the wedding band was an afterthought: a plain ring bought to match. Not any more. Couples now choose bands with as much care as the engagement ring, and the result is a wave of curved shapes, stacks and diamond eternity rings. Here is what is trending this wedding season.

1. Curved and contour bands

A curved band dips or arcs to sit snugly around the engagement ring's centre stone, so the two rings sit flush with no gap. Gentle curves look elegant; deep V-shapes make a bolder, slightly vintage statement.

2. The intentional stack

Instead of one band, many brides now wear two or three: a plain band, a fine diamond band and the engagement ring, sometimes in mixed metals. Stacking lets you add a ring for anniversaries and children over the years.

3. Eternity and half-eternity rings

A full eternity ring is set with diamonds all the way round; a half-eternity covers only the top. Full eternities look stunning but cannot easily be resized, so be sure of the size. Half-eternities are more comfortable for everyday wear and can usually be resized.

Sizing an eternity ringBecause diamonds go all the way round, full eternity rings generally cannot be resized and may need to be remade. Measure carefully, ideally at the end of the day when fingers are slightly larger.

4. Warm gold and mixed metals

Yellow gold is the colour of the moment, but mixing metals has become perfectly acceptable: a yellow gold engagement ring with a white gold diamond band can look deliberate and modern. The trick is to repeat each metal at least once in your jewellery.

5. His band gets interesting too

Men's bands are moving beyond plain gold: brushed finishes, bevelled edges and a single flush-set diamond are all popular. Matching his metal to hers is a nice touch, not a rule.

Before you buy

  • Take your engagement ring with you, or send its measurements, so the band fits against it.
  • Match the metal and karat if the rings will touch, so they wear evenly.
  • Order early: bands are made to order and need two to three working weeks.

Can I wear a wedding band without an engagement ring?

Of course. Many couples skip the engagement ring altogether and choose a diamond band as their only ring.

Should my wedding band match my engagement ring metal?

It is a good idea if they will be worn together, so they wear at the same rate, but mixing metals is also a popular look.
