How to read a gold rate

Purity

Karat is purity in 24 parts: 24K is 99.9% gold (bars and coins), 22K is 91.6% (traditional Indian jewellery), 18K is 75%, 14K is 58.5% and 9K is 37.5%. The lower the karat, the harder the alloy, which is why diamond settings use 18K, 14K or 9K. Hallmarks state the fineness: 750 for 18K, 585 for 14K, 375 for 9K.

Units

India quotes per gram and per 10 grams. Dubai and South Asia use the tola (11.664 g). London, New York and the bullion markets use the troy ounce (31.103 g). The table above shows both the gram and the local unit for each country.

Why countries differ

Gold trades at one world price in US dollars. The rate you see at home is that price in your currency, plus your country’s import duty and sales tax, plus the refiner’s and jeweller’s margins. India adds 6% import duty (included in the Indian rate above) and 3% GST on the bill; the UK and EU charge no VAT on investment gold but do on jewellery.

Frequently asked questions

Where do these gold rates come from?

From the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA, ibjarates.com), the reference rate Indian jewellers and banks quote against. IBJA publishes an AM and a PM rate on working days for 999, 995, 916, 750 and 585 gold and 999 silver, excluding GST; we show those figures as published. The other countries are the same rate converted to the local currency at today’s exchange rate, without India’s import duty.

Why is the gold rate in India higher than the international rate?

The international rate is the bare spot price of gold on the world market. India charges 6% import duty on gold, so the Indian (IBJA) rate is the landed rate: spot price plus duty, the way bullion associations and jewellers quote it. 3% GST is added on the bill, and a counter in Surat or Mumbai adds the refiner’s and jeweller’s margin on top.

What is the difference between 24K, 22K, 18K and 14K gold?

Karat is purity out of 24 parts. 24K is 99.9% pure gold, 22K is 91.6%, 18K is 75%, 14K is 58.5% and 9K is 37.5%. Diamond jewellery is made in 18K, 14K or 9K because pure gold is too soft to hold stones securely.

How is the gold rate used in the price of a Zarna Jewels piece?

Every product page shows the metal weight in grams and a breakdown of its price. We multiply the weight by our rate for the chosen karat, add the laboratory-grown diamonds by their total weight and grade and our making and setting charges, then 3% GST. Delivery and the optional IGI report are added at checkout.

How often are the rates on this page updated?

IBJA publishes a morning (AM) and an afternoon (PM) rate on working days; this page checks for the new session every 10 minutes and exchange rates once an hour. Our own rate follows the IBJA rate: it is updated by our team from Price Config, or automatically every morning.

What is a tola, and what is a troy ounce?

A tola is the traditional South Asian and Gulf unit: 11.664 grams. A troy ounce, used in London, New York and the bullion markets, is 31.103 grams. India quotes gold per 10 grams; most other countries per gram or per ounce.

Can I buy gold bars or coins from Zarna Jewels?

No. We make laboratory-grown diamond jewellery in gold and silver. The rates here help you understand the metal part of a jewellery price and compare it across countries.
