Diamond Stud Earrings Size Guide: Carats, Millimetres and Settings
Stud sizes are confusing because earrings are sold by total carat weight. How to read the numbers, what each size looks like on the ear and which settings and backs to choose.

Diamond studs are the most-worn piece of diamond jewellery there is. Choosing the size should be easy, but earring weights are confusing because they are usually given as the total for the pair. Here is how to read the numbers and choose a size you will love every day.
Quick guide
- "tw" or "ctw" means total weight of both earrings: 1 ct tw = two 0.50 ct stones.
- 0.25–0.50 ct per ear suits everyday wear for most people.
- Choose screw backs or secure push backs for valuable studs.

Total weight vs per ear
A pair advertised as "1 carat" usually means one carat in total, so half a carat in each ear. Always check whether a listing gives weight per stone or for the pair, and compare like with like.
Which size suits you?
| Per ear | Diameter | Look |
|---|---|---|
| 0.10–0.15 ct | 3.0–3.4 mm | Tiny sparkle; second piercings, children |
| 0.25 ct | 4.1 mm | Discreet everyday studs |
| 0.50 ct | 5.1 mm | The classic: noticed, never loud |
| 0.75 ct | 5.8 mm | Confident |
| 1.00 ct+ | 6.4 mm+ | Statement studs |
Earlobe size matters too: on small earlobes, 0.50 ct per ear can look substantial; on larger lobes, a bigger stone may look more balanced.
Settings
Four-prong
Shows the most diamond; round stones look slightly square.
Martini (three-prong)
A cone-shaped basket that sits close to the ear and makes stones look a touch larger.
Bezel
Smooth and secure; great with hats, scarves and headsets.
Earring backs
- Screw backs: the most secure; ideal for valuable studs and sleeping in them.
- Push backs (friction): convenient; check they grip firmly.
- Locking backs: a secure middle ground on some designs.
A matched pair matters
Two earrings are seen side by side, so the stones should match in size, colour and cut. A good pair is matched to within a fraction of a millimetre and the same colour grade, so one ear never looks brighter than the other. When you compare prices, check that the stones were matched as a pair, not simply two stones of the same weight.
Shapes beyond round
Princess
A crisp square with plenty of sparkle; looks modern and slightly larger face-up than a round of the same weight.
Oval and pear
Elongated shapes look bigger per carat and flatter the ear line; set them pointing up or down to taste.
Cushion
Soft corners and a vintage feel; a good choice if round feels too expected.
Lab-grown studs: more size for the budget
Because lab-grown diamonds cost less per carat, many people choose a step up in size, for example 0.50 ct per ear instead of 0.25 ct, for a similar budget. Keep cut quality high: in studs, a well-cut stone in G–H colour and VS–SI clarity looks white and bright from normal viewing distance.
Round diamond studs
What does 1 ct tw mean on earrings?
One carat total weight for the pair, so about 0.50 ct in each earring.
What is the most popular stud size?
Around 0.50 ct per ear (1 ct total weight) is a classic choice; 0.25 ct per ear suits very discreet everyday wear.
Can I sleep in diamond studs?
Screw-back studs are the safest for sleeping; take push backs out to avoid losing a back.
Do diamond studs need a grading report?
For 0.50 ct per ear and above, individual reports are worth having; smaller pairs are usually sold with grades on the invoice.
Are 1 carat studs heavy?
Not noticeably. A 1 ct diamond weighs 0.2 g; the setting and back weigh more. Good backs keep larger studs upright.
